There is a wide variety of outdoor fall activities that allow kids and parents to enjoy nature, this wonderful season, and some fun fall activities.
The leaves are falling, and the air is cool and crisp. One could even argue that a fall hike is better than a summer, or even spring hike. The key here is to keep an eye on the weather, and be prepared. If it looks like it will be unseasonably cold, you might go midday or dress for the cool weather.
Keep in mind, however, that hiking will warm you and the kids up. It's best to dress in easily-removed and tied-to-waist or tucked-in-bag layers.
Also don't forget to pack as if you were hiking in summer, with plenty of water and snacks in case anyone gets thirsty or overheated.
If you want to get outside and teach your children to understand that important connection between land and the table, a fall farm visit and/or a pumpkin patch visit is a great fall outdoor activity.
Almost anywhere you are is within a daytrip or a short drive to a farm, and fall is when many throw open their gates to visitors.
Be sure you bring a cooler in case the farm sells other food goodies, such as apple butter or fresh cheese.
It's probably too cold to hit the beach or go swimming, but fall is a great time to hit the water. Take the kids to go canoeing (stunning with fall leaves changing around you), fishing, go paddleboating, go jet skiing, or simply rent a house on a lake or beach. The off-season around the water is sometimes more fun than the peak season.
Depending on where you are, the family might be able to do things like go rafting or kayaking. It's certainly a good time of year for any sort of river, lake or other water cruises or tours.
This can be a little trickier, but fall can still be a nice time of year for camping. Essentially, consider the climate where you will be camping first. You also should consider visiting a campground that is either near hotels or has its own heated rentals (such as cabins or motor homes).
Also be sure to check the weather carefully before you go. Sometimes it can be very warm during the day, but downright cold at night. Pack a sleeping bag for everyone that is rated for cold temperatures, and be sure you are well equipped with clothes and gear for cold weather.
