Named one of the country's top 10 family beaches by MSN.com, Hilton Head Island attracts families not only for its sandy beach, but its myriad of other activities.

Yes, the 12 miles of sandy beach on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, are absolutely gorgeous and perfect for families, with the shallow water and gentle waves. But there's more to Hilton Head Island than just the strolling and searching for sandollars or frolicking in the ocean. Here's a peek at other things family-friendly things to do on this pretty island:

Golf on Hilton Head Island

Introduce your kids to the sport - or help them hone their skills at any of the 15 golf courses offering spectacular scenery. Temperatures average in the humid 80s in the heart of the summer, so book early tee times, before the sun's heat becomes too overwhelming.

The Sandbox, an Interactive Children's Museum

Young children have fun learning as they play in such activity centers as the International Bazaar, Track the T-Rex, Builders of Tomorrow, Loggerhead Sandcastle and Rhythm and Blues Room. The museum is open Monday through Saturday in the summer months, and is a particularly great way to pass time on overcast days. Admission is $6 for ages 3 and up; toddlers and babies 2 and under are free. 18A Pope Avenue.

Coastal Discovery Museum

This museum has indoor and outdoor exhibits, but also offers tours and cruises around the island -- all designed to educate as well as entertain visitors. Tours include Pinckney Island Bicycle Tour , Turtle Talk and Walk (about the threatened loggerhead sea turtle) and the Forts of Port Royal. At the Honey Horn site, which is 68 acres and dotted with historic structures, visitors can learn about the island's happenings during the Civil War, its earlier plantation years, as well as how Hilton Head developed into a world-class, family-friendly resort. 70 Honey Horn Drive, 100 William Hilton Parkway.

Adventure Cove Family Fun Center

Here, families can play 36 holes of "adventure mini golf" along two Caribbean-themed courses. The other big draw is the island's biggest arcade, with hundreds of "old school" arcade games like ski-ball, as well as the newest interactive video games. Exchange prize tickets at the redemption center. Highway 278 and Folly Field Road.

Bike Rentals and Bike Paths on the Island

Rent a bicycle from any number of local shops and take the whole family out on the more than 50 miles of public pathways and recreational trails on the island. Download a pathways map from the Town of Hilton Head municipal government website.
