Dozens of family spring break vacation destinations abound in the Lone Star State. But San Antonio stands out for its downtown beauty, history and mega amusement park.

Texas is a big state. There are plenty of state-wide attractions that could keep families road tripping through the Lone Star State for a month, let alone a week of spring break.

But if you're looking to head to Texas with your children in March, which is when school kids typically enjoy a vacation from classes, consider San Antonio, Texas. With loads of history, fun attractions for kids, plus a scenic downtown (with shopping and restaurants galore), all ages can enjoy this destination in Texas.

Located in the south-central part of the state, San Antonio has great weather in March--the average temperature is about 72 degrees Fahrenheit. That's perfectly comfortable climate to enjoy all there is to enjoy outdoors in the San Antonio area.

Kids and adults alike love the San Antonio River Walk (Paseo del Rio). Since the San Antonio River flows right through the heart of downtown, the Parks & Recreation Department has created and maintained a wonderfully pedestrian friendly walkway along the waterway, and several shops and restaurants also line the river, a full level below the hustle and bustle of the downtown streets. The River Walk has been toted as the "#1 Entertainment Destination in Texas." Take a 35-minute boat cruise or a shorter taxi ride along river and under bridges with Rio San Antonio Cruises.

The Alamo is another must-visit site in San Antonio. This mission is where rebel Texans (Anglos and native Mexicans living in Texas) fought off the Mexican army for 13 days during the Texas Revolution. Although the rebel Texans lost the battle, they, obviously, later went on to win the war. Browse through the on-site museum, and snap photos of one of the most photographed facades in the country.

For some heart-pumping excitement, head to Six Flags Fiesta Texas to ride the thrilling roller coasters, including the new inverted "Goliath" which is scheduled to debut in spring 2008. For younger children, there are milder rides, as well as live entertainment. Opens for the season March 8.

For indoor fun, San Antonio has loads of museums an other kid-friendly attractions:

  • Buckhorn Saloon & Museum (yes, kids are allowed in to learn more about Texas history, see the cowboy collectibles and admire the incredible horn collection)
  • Ripley's Believe It or Not & Louis Tussaud's Wax Works
  • San Antonio Children's Museum
  • Guinness World Records Museum, Ripley's Haunted Adventure and Tomb Rider 3D (all in one location)
