Fall in Virginia with kids provides a wide mix of attractions and activities for families, whether you want to see fall foliage in the country or in an urban setting.
Virginia has an amazingly diverse mix of fall adventures. Families can find orchards for apple picking, or patches for pumpking picking. There are corn mazes and hay rides. But there are also many contrasting city adventures, from the capital in Richmond to the D.C. area in Northern Virginia.
Fall Activities in Virginia for Kids
There are loads of places to find corn mazes and pick-your-own apple orchards. Many of the farms hosting harvest adventures also have a wide variety of other games, activities, and even rides. There are also farms open with activities throughout the state. The Virginia tourism site provides a list of corn mazes and apple picking orchards.
You can experience a whole host of fall wildlife encounters, ranging from butterfly gardens and turkey spotting to reptile centers, safari parks and zoos. Hit the cities and the museums. Even in the bigger cities like Richmond and the nation's capital just over the Virginia border, you can still find trees and parks showing off the fall colors. If you stay in Northern Virginia, you'll also have a wealth of other sights to see, including the Arlington Cemetery and the Manassas Civil War battlefields. There are also quaint smaller cities in the bustle of the D.C. area like Manassas's old town, Leesburg, Middleburg and Warrenton.
Fall scenic drives are fun for the kids, so long as you get out of the car frequently. Fortunately, with the scenic roads in Virginia, there are lots of places to stop at a lookout or a shop or an attraction. The Blue Ridge Parkway rides along the peak ridgeline of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Skyline Drive is a lovely scenic ride through a national park. Visit some of Virginia's many national parks during the fall, when they are beautiful. Manassas National Battlefield Park mentioned above, for example, is a chance to enjoy the outdoors, learn about history, and get in touch with nature. There are nice hikes, as well as spots for picnicking. Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park is also situated near the cute downtown of Fredericksburg, with independent boutiques and loads of antiques shops.
