Family-Friendly Green Resort in the Georgia Mountains
Brasstown Valley Resort is family-friendly resort in the Georgia mountains that was green before green was cool. The kids can enjoy horseback riding, hiking and more.
There is actually a pretty interesting story behind the resort. The entire resort was built by the state of Georgia, which still owns it. It's refreshing to find an example of government gone good.
Green Practices at the Brasstown Valley Resort
This resort isn't green in the very hip, trendy fashion. The resort doesn't even really advertise itself as a green resort.
Back in the 1990s when it was being developed by the state, however, they used various environmentally friendly practices that are just coming en vogue today. For example, they:
- Preserved more than 500 acres of land that now belongs to the resort and is mostly green and wooded
- Planted more than 2000 trees and other vegetation, and wildlife specialists are helping to preserve and protect the valley’s stream
- Created 3.5 acres of wetland habitat
- Protect a variety of wildlife, fish and birds on the property including the rare Purple Gallinule bird and the threatened Blotched Chub fish
Brasstown Valley Resort with Kids
The resort is very family friendly, although it seems a bit like it's been geared more towards 60-somethings in the past and is just now emphasizing the younger crowd. But certainly most of the pieces are in place for a family with kids to visit.
Holidays are especially fun with kids, as there is often a pretty detailed itinerary of resort happenings (such as a haunted hike for Halloween). There is a pretty wide range of activities for kids at the resort anytime, including:
- arts and crafts lessons for parents and kids
- pony rides and horseback trail rides
- Parent's Night Out
- indoor and outdoor pool
- hay rides
- hiking trails
- fishing (and the parents and kids and get fishing poles right on the resort to use)
Multi-Generational Trips to Brasstown Valley Resort
This resort is probably one of the better in the Southeast when it comes to multi-generational travel for a couple of reasons.
For one thing, there are many activities on the property and off that appeal to ages ranging from little ones to grandparents, from hiking to antiquing.
Small children can splash in the heated pool or create crafts, while grandparents relax in a rocking chair on the porch looking out on the valley and mountains. There is dining such as upscale buffet or a downstairs casual restaurant that gets a livelier pub atmosphere after dark.
Another major reason is the availability of the cottages, which are great for multi-generational travel or for two or more families meeting for a vacation together. Each cottage features four rooms around the perimeter, with a central parlor with kitchen, dining room, living room and wood burning fireplace that is shared.
