While there is a rich history in Boston, that doesn't mean it has to be dull for the kids. There is a ton of fun to be had for children and families. Here are some of the best things to do with kids in Boston.
Are the kids into Transformers? They will love a duck tour in Boston covering both land and sea. The tours go from the historic streets of Boston before the bus transforms into a boat and plunges into Boston Harbor for a cruise tour.
Boston Common is a lush oasis of greenery and relaxation right in the heart of the city. One of the oldest parks in the U.S., this vast park features ponds where the kids can ride the famous Boston Common swan boats. It is nothing to see any manner of pleasant wildlife right in the city, such as squirrels and ducks. In the winter, hit the Frog Pond for some outdoor ice skating.
There are also some wonderful museums for families with kids in Boston. The Boston Children's Museum features exhibits allowing kids to interact directly to learn and have fun. Faneuil Hall Marketplace is situated in a historic building, so the kids can soak up some history, but they won't get as bored as it now serves as a fun shopping venue.
The New England Aquarium is a fun destination for kids, and the highlight is certainly the penguins. While you're in Boston, you can also see more marine wildlife by taking a Boston Harbor Whale Watching tour.
Just because the kids are on vacation doesn't mean they wouldn't mind seeing school. Just across the bridge from Boston lies Cambridge, a fun and funky city sure to please older children and teenagers.
This is also the spot to find the Harvard Museum of Natural History and the MIT Museum, both of which offer some great children's programs. If nothing else, why not show them some inspiration to get good grades and get accepted into one of the two best colleges in the U.S. (on a scholarship, of course).
The other great thing about visiting Boston is it's close to so many other towns and cities. For a fun daytrip, especially in the summer, visit Newport, Rhode Island. This is a wonderful spot to relax on the beach, sample some frozen lemonade and tour mansions. Another nice spot is Providence, Rhode Island, home to Brown University and a nice, smaller, family-friendly city.
